Table sweetener based on steviol glycosides from the stevia plant. Suitable for cooking and baking, for sweetening drinks, fruits, salads and sauces.
The stevia plant (Stevia rebaudiana) is a small perennial plant from South America. Its specialty is the almost incredible sweetness of the leaves, which is mainly caused by so-called steviol glycosides. The particularly high content of steviol glycosides distinguishes them significantly from approximately 300 other species of stevia plants.
The main ingredients of the leaves are the so-called steviol glycosides (eg stevioside, rebaudioside), which are up to 300 times sweeter than the well-known cane sugar and give the leaves their unmistakably sweet taste. The whole leaves and the ground herb as a green powder are 10-15 times sweeter than sugar.
Stevia has practically no calories. Steviol glycosides were approved as a sweetener in the EU in December 2011. Stevia obviously does not harm the teeth of children or adults. There is even toothpaste with stevia.
