Alongside carbohydrates and proteins, fats represent the third group of macronutrients in our diet. Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are the two forms of polyunsaturated fatty acids that are regarded as essential to the human body.
We cannot make these ourselves, but the body needs them for critical functions such as those of the brain and nerve cells. They also help maintain normal cardiac function.
That is why it is vital that you obtain sufficient quantities of essential fatty acids through your diet. Omega-6 fatty acids can be obtained easily as sufficient quantities can be found in plant-based foods. You should therefore focus on products containing considerable amounts of omega-3 fatty acids, as it is far more difficult to find these in foods.
Polyunsaturated fatty acids: DHA and EPA
Virtually all plant-based foods, such as linseed oil, rapeseed oil, walnut or perilla oil, only contain the precursor of omega-3 fatty acids – alpha linolenic acid (ALA). ALA must first be converted into the biologically active forms DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) in the body in order for us to be able to make use of the fatty acids. DHA and EPA, which are also known as fish fatty acids, are mainly found in fatty fish, such as salmon, mackerel or herring. Your diet should contain at least two portions of fish per week to cover the amount of essential fatty acids needed through your diet. If you do not consume the amount needed through your diet, it may make sense to support your body with omega-3 fish oil capsules.
Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil
Each organic omega-3 fish oil capsule contains 750 mg of organic oil from rainbow trout. Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) is a rapidly growing salmonid that originated in North America and was farmed for food in England in the second half of the 19th century.
